I have always been drawn to bodywork as an art to make others feel physical ease and emotional peace. However, I have learned that bodywork is so much more than simply “feeling good”. Holistic bodywork improves the function and well-being of the entire body including circulatory, respiratory, digestive, immune, and nervous systems. Great bodywork improves the quality of life of the receiver, leading to better health outcomes due to greater functionality and mobility, as well as decreasing emotional stress and perception of pain. As a licensed massage therapist, I am so grateful to participate in this process.
I see myself and my treatment work as an educational journey instead of something which I “do” to you. Together, we are experiencing a development of the client’s physical embodiment from restriction and discomfort to freedom and relief. Throughout the treatment process, we discuss exactly what you are feeling and compare this to my training in kinesiology, anatomy and physiology, and pain science. I humbly respect each client and their body as having their own unique experience in this world, and always defer to the pace of your particular healing path in our treatments together.
I have an undergraduate degree in Medical Anthropology from Oregon State University. In my studies at OSU I learned about the philosophy of medicine and treatment systems from the micro– understanding the mind/soul/body connections in health– to the macro– studying disease and the social and environmental structures which cause and heal them. I studied ethnobotany, microbiology, healing modalities of ancient civilizations, biochemistry, and genetics. I studied holistic healthcare contrasted with allopathic (mainstream) medicine, and its statistical outcomes from a whole-person perspective. This education created a foundation for my philosophy that mainstream medicine has its place in the treatment of certain acute diseases, while holistic, less invasive whole-body healing modalities have greater efficacy for many long-term, chronic health states.
I received my Massage Therapist training from Whatcom Community College, and then worked and trained at Advanced Medical Massage in Bellingham, Washington, before starting my own practice.
When I’m not in the treatment room, I can be found hiking in nature with my partner and children. My biggest hobby currently is learning more about treating my clients, followed by sewing my own clothing. I also love to meditate and sleep in a fluffy bed.
